Kelvin's Engagement Story

Diary Entry on December 6th, 2003:

and cherish another chapter of my life. Months leading the big question..

Kelvin and I had decided to move to Hong Kong and get some life experience and spend more time with my family. With such a big commitment from Kelvin and since we'll be living with my parents in Hong Kong, not to mention the 7 years together, it's time to suspect a proposal.

Mid October on the plane somewhere between Toronto and Vancouver . Although Kelvin and I had brief conversations about marriage, it wasn't something that really hit me unit I accidentally stumbled across and email from Maggie (my sister) to Kelvin. I was so bored on the plane; I opened Kel's Lotus Notes to browse. Out of curiosity, I saw Maggie's note and opened it. The message requested information from Kelvin for style and specs. Although there were no mentions of a ring, I think I knew what it meant. I remember a grin on my face but mostly still in shock. With this knowledge, I tried to give hints to Kel about the rings without being too obvious. I was really expecting the plans to take place in 2004, but then came December 5, 2003, our seven years and eight months anniversary.

"Friday after work, we're walking to the parking spot and I realized the car had been moved. Kelvin had gone somewhere but insisted that he can't tell me. He told me to start thinking about what to wear. We're going somewhere fancy that requires a full suit attire. After about an hour of hustle and bustle trying to put on something nice (but I had no shoes), off we went. Took about an hour and through some detours, we'd finally arrived. We had trouble finding a parking spot at the newly renovated "The Old Mills". The venue was packed with people celebrating Christmas. The building was amazing, more beautiful that I remember .

Seven years ago on my 19 th birthday, Kelvin surprised me and took me to the Old Mills. It was our first fine dining experience. He was ready with my favorite Cali Lilies. The only thing that he didn't expect was the prices on the menu. Ah, days before we had credit cards! Kelvin had to drive out to the ATM machine. He left me sitting by myself while they served my first fine dining soup. Finally, he returned with enough money to pay the bill. We had an amazing evening with food and dancing. We had especially requested the song Unforgettable and danced to it. Now back to the present day.

Walked into the Old Mills Fine Dining, the restaurant was different than I'd remembered. It was still very exclusive with the big chairs, expensive rugs and silvers. Kelvin said that we are VIPs and can order whatever we want from the menu. It was actually a set price package that he got so we ordered the most expensive dishes on the menu. I'd ordered my Oyster, Lobster tail and Strawberry something dessert. During the first course, I took a spoonful of what I thought was mash potatoes under the oyster and had to spit it out. I'd put a mouthful of salt in my mouth. It was really funny. My lobster tail was disappointing but the dessert made up for it. In between meals we got up to dance. It was hard to stay on the dance floor. The band was playing a lot of fast beat holiday songs. How do you dance to Jingle Bells?

After our dinner, we walked around the banquet area just as I found our exiting door, Kelvin said let's go that way towards the Inn . When we went to the front desk, I knew we were going to stay for the night. We head up to the top floor (5 th Floor, Room 502). Kelvin opened the door and the carpet was filled with rose peddles. It was their penthouse suite with a high bed, fireplace and Jacuzzi. On the bed was a big present that said "open me". I sat on the bed with peddles beside me and started to unwrap. Three empty boxes later, I had gotten to a small jewelry box. Kelvin nervously got down on one knee and asked me to marry him with a tiny little tear drop from the corner of his eyes. I was still in shock, felt like 5 seconds of my life flashed in front of my eyes. I was searching for words, the right words. Brilliantly, I came out saying "Of course I will". We gave each other a huge hug; he had forgotten to give me the ring. I had to remind him to give me the ring. The ring was beautiful, a simple but elegant look. However, the diamond didn't fit snuggly up his nose (not that I tried it). The ring band was too big, but I kept it on all night anyway. We opened the bottle of wine and chatted a bit about the whole experience. We took pictures trying to showcase the ring and capturing the moments through the night.

After calming down, we'd stepped into the Jacuzzi and finished off the wine and some chocolate covered strawberries. We tried to catch some shut eye at around 3am. I'd only slept for a couple hours, woke up at 5am. Must be all the excitement!

In the morning, we'd enjoyed a continental breakfast facing the courtyard. It's a gorgeous courtyard. After breakfast we headed straight to the jeweler to have the ring resized. Now ring-less again for another week.
